Absolutely, more women should consider construction as a career path! Young women entering the workforce have long been told that the trades and pathways are not designed for “girls”. Thirty years ago, women did not grow up to manage construction portfolios at major corporations in some of the largest cities in the world. The idea of working their way up through the ranks in this male-dominated field seemed foreign. There just weren’t many female role models to consider when exploring what it would mean to pursue a career in the construction industry.
Many found their opportunity through internship programs, shadowing their dads, relatives, or other male mentors at local construction companies. These experiences provided a hands-on introduction to a career in construction management, and without them, many wouldn’t be where they are now, doing what they love. These internships also gave them the confidence to pursue their ambitions, despite the underrepresentation of women in the field.
Today the construction industry remains one of the least to embrace diversity, equity and inclusion, however there are seats at the table ready and waiting for women eager to pull up a chair. Below are several compelling reasons why this field could be a great fit for women including:
Encouraging women to explore and enter this field can help diversify the industry and bring about positive changes. Plus, it’s a sector where dedication and skills often outweigh traditional stereotypes, allowing women to thrive and lead.
Meet (4) women that are leading construction firms and collectively seeing nearly half a billion in major programs & projects. These women are members of an exciting and exclusive club, and their unique perspectives and shared experiences are critical to helping usher in the next generation of women in construction. We thank them for contributing their words and experiences to the industry! @ChristineMcHugh, @MildredTolentino, @MarianaCirciumaru and @AlexisMcSween

In closing, the opportunity and achievement gaps will not be closed for young women dreaming of a future in construction without intentional, meaningful efforts to help them. Every young woman deserves a similar opportunity, and it is incumbent upon women like those mentioned, who have already climbed the ladder, to continue reaching out to offer the resources and support necessary to introduce more young women to rewarding careers in construction. We thank you for what you do!
